Your Relationship With God

It is a marvelous thing that the one true eternal God, the Creator of the universe, desires to have a relationship with each of us.
He came to the world in the form of man and died for us upon the cross and rose again in order that we could be saved and have a relationship with Him.  2 Corinthians 5:19 “To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing
their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.”

In the beginning man had a relationship with God on the basis of being created by Him. If Adam and Eve had not sinned all of us would be children of God on this basis. However Adam sinned and we lost the relationship of God being our Father.   Romans 5:12
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”   Through the disobedience of one (Adam), all our sinners. Through the obedience of one, (our Lord Jesus Christ), we can be made righteous. Romans 5:15-19 "But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead,
much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many
offences unto justification.  For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace
and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)  Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon
all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous."

We must be born again in order to become children of God. This is not something that can be inherited from our earthly parents. We inherit a sin nature from them. Psalm 51:5 “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

That is why we must receive a new birth. John 3:3-7 “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.  Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.  That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.”

God has left us a plan in His word whereby we can get to know Him. We never stop growing in our relationship with God.
We progressively grow closer to Him as we walk with Him. Following are steps that God has given to us that will bring us into
a relationship with Him.

1.Believe.  John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
1 Thessalonians 4:14 “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.”

2.Repent. This involves asking God for forgiveness of sins, and with His help turning away from sin and turning to Him.   Luke 13:3 “..except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”   2 Corinthians 7:10 “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.”

3.Receive.  When we  believe and repent we are ready to receive Him into our lives as Lord and Savior. John 1:12 “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”
Colossians 2:6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him”

At this point we have started our relationship with God. We want to continue and not stop at the beginning of our relationship.
We go on with Him in obedience to His word.

4. Be baptized.  Acts 2:38  “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”  Baptism in the early church was done by immersion in the name of Jesus Christ.    Acts 8:16 “(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)”
Acts 10:48 “And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.."
Acts 19:5 “When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

5. Be filled with the Holy Ghost.   Acts 2:4  “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues,
as the Spirit gave them utterance.”  Acts 10:45  “And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came
with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.46  For they heard them speak with tongues,
and magnify God..”

Acts 19:6 “And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them;
and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.”

Remember, our relationship with God is to be one that is continually growing. We can
draw close to Him. He delights in His relationship with us!   James 4:8 "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
